The LDRD program is an investment in the Nation’s future, ensuring mission support that is often realized after many years. Often, research and development does not advance on a short timescale. The transition of a scientific accomplishment to a developed mission capability can take years. Below are examples of LDRD investments that have grown into larger investments or capabilities over a course of years or decades.
